TEXTURED KNITTED HAT & SCARF from Craftown

Scarf measures 12 x 64 inches, plus tassels.

Coats & Clark's "Red Heart" Knitting Worsted, 4 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 17 ounces of No. 403 Lt.Oxford.

Knitting Needles: 1 pair No. 11 and No. 15.

GAUGE: 5 sts = 2 inches; 4 rows = 1 inch.
Be sure to check your gauge before starting article. Use any size needles which will obtain the stitch gauge above.

NOTE: Use 2 strands of yarn held together throughout.

 

SCARF

Starting at a narrow edge with No. 15 needles and 2 strands of yarn held together, cast on 30 sts.

1st row: Knit across.

2nd row: Purl across.

3rd row: P 2, * k 2, p 4. Repeat from * across to within last 4 sts, k 2, p 2.

4th row: K 2, * p 2, k 4. Repeat from * across to within last 4 sts, p 2, k 2.

5th through 8th rows: Repeat first through 4th rows.

9th row: Knit across.

10th row: Purl across.

11 th row: K 1, * p 4, k 2. Repeat from * across to within last 5 sts, p 4, k 1.

12th row: P 1, * k4, p 2. Repeat from * across to within last 5 sts, k 4, p 1.

13th through 16th rows: Repeat 9th through 12th rows.

Repeat first through 16th rows for pattern.

Work in pattern until total length is about 64 inches, ending with either the 2nd or 10th row of pattern.

Bind off. Block to measure 12 x 64 inches.

Tassel (Make 16): Wind yarn 25 times around a 54 inch piece of cardboard. Tie strands securely together at one end-top; cut loops at other end.

Wind yarn several times around strands 1 1/2 inches below tied end and fasten securely. Trim evenly.

Fasten 8 tassels evenly spaced along each narrow edge of scarf.

 

 

HAT

Starting at face edge with No. 11 needles and 2 strands of yarn held together.

Cast on 54 sts.

For facing, work 3 rows of stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row).

Next row: K across, thus forming fold line on right side.

Change to No. 15 needles and work in pattern as for Scarf until length from fold line is about 5 1/2 inches, ending with 10th row of pattern.

Shape top as follows:

1st row: * K 7, k 2 tog-one st decreased. Repeat from * across---48 sts.

2nd row: * P 6, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across-6 sts decreased.

3rd row: Decreasing 6 sts evenly spaced, k across.

4th row: Decreasing 6 sts evenly spaced, p across-30 sts.

5th and 6th rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows-18 sts.

7th row: * K 2 tog. Repeat from * across-9 sts. Break off, leaving an 18-inch length of yarn.

Thread a large tapestry needle with this length and slip remaining sts onto it; draw sts together tightly and fasten securely-top; then with same strand, sew ends of rows together for back seam.

Fold facing at fold line to wrong side and sew in place on wrong side.

Wind yarn tightly around hat 2 inches below top to form top ornament and fasten securely.
