Snowflake Cape and Afghan

Materials:

 
  • Steel crochet hook size 0
  • 5 oz 3-ply baby acrylic

Snowflake cape, Snow Baby jacket and beret, and Spun Sugar jacket, hat and booties are original "School House" designs by Lillian Rather.

 

Crochet Abbreviations

 
  • ch - chain. sl st - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet st - stitch
  • dc - double crochet sp - space
  • hdc - half double crochet YO - yarn over
  • tr - triple crochet rnd - round
  • dcL - double crochet loop stitch inc - increase
  • dec - decrease

Gauge:
The correct gauge is important to the fit of your garments. To check gauge, make a test swatch of at least 3" square of the pattern stitch, using the yarn and hook or needle specified.
DO NOT HESITATE TO CHANGE HOOK OR NEEDLE SIZE TO OBTAIN CORRECT GAUGE.

 

SNOWFLAKE HOODED CAPE

Directions are for one size, infant to 3 months. Cape measures 15" from neckline to hem.
Gauge: 5 dc = 1"; 2 rows dc = 1"

Ch 115.

Row 1: dc in 5th ch from hook and in each remaining ch across. ch 3 to turn.

Row 2: In 3rd dc make shell (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in same st makes shell) *skip 3 st,shell in next dc. Repeat from * across row, dc in last dc, ch 3 to turn.

Rows 3, 4, 5, 6: shell over shell (make shell in center ch of shell below) across row, dc in last st, ch 3 to turn.

Row 7: Shell (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in chain below. Continue shell across row, dc in last St, ch 3 to turn.

Rows 8, 9, 10, 11, 12: Repeat row 7.

Row 13: Shell (4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in chain of shell below. Continue shell across row, dc in last st, ch 3 to turn.

Next Rows: Repeat row 13 until 17 more rows have been completed or until garment has reached length you desire. Break off.

Hood:
Count in 28 dc from beginning row of cape. Join yarn with a sl st.

Row 1: Ch 3, skip 3 dc, shell (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in same stitch) skip 3 dc.

Repeat shell across until 13 shells have been made, skip 3 dc, dc in next dc, ch 3 to turn.

Rows 2 to 10: Repeat shell over shell rows until 10 rows have been completed. (There should be 7 shells on cape extending beyond either side of the hood) Do not break yarn. Fold hood in half, right sides together, and crochet or sew across top edge. Break yarn.

Edging:
With right side of garment facing you, join another ball of yarn at neck edge in 1st st of hood. Skip starting ch 3 of 1st row, * 3 dc, picot (ch 3, slip st through 1st st of chain-picot made) 3 dc in ch 3 of next row. Repeat from around edge of hood. Sc in each dc along left front neck edge of cape, 3 sc in corner, * shell (4 dc, plcot, 4 dc), sc in starting ch of next row. Repeat from around edge of hood. Sc in each dc along left front neck edge of cape, 3 sc in corner, * shell (4 dc, picot, 4 dc), sc in starting ch of next row. Repeat from * along left side edge of cape. 3 sc in corner. Make shell over shell (5 dc, picot, 5 dc) across bottom of cape. 3 sc in corner. (this makes the bottom trim of cape) Repeat shell on right side of edge the same as worked on left side (4 dc, picot, 4 dc). 3 sc in corner and sc across right front neck edge. Attach where joined. Break yarn.

Finishing:
Double yarn and make a chain of 120 sts. Thread this through neck edge, going over and under 2 dc. Make 2 pompons 1 ½" in diameter, and attach one to each end of cord. Again double yarn, attach to point of hood and ch 10 sts. Make one 2" diameter pompon and attach to end of chain.

 

AFGHAN

Size: approx 32" x 43"

 

Materials:

 
  • Worsted wt yarn 24 oz
  • aluminum crochet hook size K (Canadian size 2) or size need for gauge

Gauge:
3 sc = 1" * rows = 3 ½ "

Ch 99 loosely.

Row 1: in 5th ch from hook, work (dc, ch3, dc), * sk 3 ch, work (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch; rep from * across, ending sk next ch, dc in last ch; ch 1, turn.

Row 2: sc in first dc, * 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sc in sp between next 2 dc; repeat from * across; ch 1, turn.

Row 3: sc in each of first 4 sc, * make puff st as follows: Yo, pull up a loop in next sc, Yo and draw through 2 loops, (YO pull up a loop in same sc, YO and draw through 2 loops) 4 times (6 loops on hook), YO and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 (puff st made), sc in each of next 3 sc; rep from * across, ending last rep with sc in each of rem 4 sc; ch 1, turn.

Row 4: sc in first sc, * sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in puff st; rep from * across, ending sc in each of rem 4 sc; ch 3, turn: 97 sc.

Row 5: sk first 2 sc, * (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sk 3 sc; rep from * across, ending sk next sc, dc in rem sc; ch 1, turn.

Rep rows 2 -5 until afghan measures approx. 41" long, ending by working row 5. At end of last row, do not ch; finish off

Shell border:
work 1 row of sc around entire afghan. Start shell patt in corner: in first sc, work 7 dc, * sk 2 sc, work 1 sc in next sc, sk 2 sc, work 7 dc in next sc; rep from * arouond. Finish off.
