Easy Baby Ensemble

Materials:

  • three 1 ½ ounce skeins Caron Baby Dazzle Aire
  • size F crochet hook or size required to obtain given gauge
  • 1 yard of ¼ inch satin ribbon for booties
  • 2 yards of ½ inch satin ribbon for sacque and bonnet
  • thread to match ribbon
  • sewing needle and blunt tapestry needle
  • Gauge: 5 shells equal 4 inches 9 rows equal 4 inches TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

 

SACQUE

Beginning at neck edge, ch 62 (to measure 12 inches).

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 61 sc. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), turn.

Row 2: 2 Dc in next St, * sk 1 St, 2 dc in next St, repeat from * across, ending dc in last St, ch 3, turn.

Row 3: * Dc, ch 1, dc 1 between next 2 dc, repeat from * across, ending dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 4: *3 Dc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * across, ending dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 5: *2 Dc between first and 2nd dc of next dc group, 2 dc between 2nd and 3rd dc of same group, repeat from* across, ending dc in top of ch-3, ch 3 turn.

Row 6 : *[2 Dc, ch 1, 2 dc (shell made) between 2nd and 3rd dc of next 4-dc group, repeat from * across, ending dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 7: Work shell in each of first 4 ch-1 sps, [2 dc between first and 2nd dc of next shell, (ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 2 dc between 3rd and 4th dc of shell (raglan inc made)], work shell in each of next 5 ch-1 sps, work 2nd raglan inc in next shell, work shell in each of next 8 ch-1 sps, work 3rd raglan inc in next shell, work shell in each of next 5 ch-1 sps, work 4th raglan inc in next shell, work shell in each of last 4 ch-1 sps, dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 8: Work shell in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 9: Work shell in each of first 5 ch-1 sps, work raglan inc in next shell, work shell in each of next 7 ch-1 sps, work 2nd raglan inc in next shell, work shell in each of next 10 ch-1 sps, work 3rd raglan inc in next shell, work shell in next 7 ch-1 sps, work 4th raglan inc in next shell, work shell in last 5 ch-1 sps, dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Body of Sacque:
Row 1: (Work shell in next ch-1 sp) 6 times for front, work 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next 9 ch-1 sps, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp (armhole formed), (work shell in next ch-1 sp) 12 times for back, work 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next 9 ch-1 sps, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp (armhole formed), (shell in next ch-1 sp) 6 times for front, dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn.

Row 2: Work shell in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn - 26 shells.

Repeat Row 2 until sacque measures 6 ½ inches from underarm or desired length; end on wrong side, ch 3, turn.

Next Row: 5 dc in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of turning ch. Do not fasten off.

Front and Neck Edging:
Ch 1, sc up front edge, around neck and down left front edge, working 3 sc in each upper front corner. Fasten off.

Sleeves:
Row 1: With wrong side facing, join yarn at underarm in same ch-1 sp as 2 dc of body, ch 3, work shell in each of next 9 ch-1 sps, dc in next ch-1 sp with 2 dc of body, ch 3, turn.

Row 2: Work shell in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of ch-3, ch 3, turn. Repeat Row 2 until sleeve measures 4 ½ inches or desired length, end on wrong side, ch 3, turn.

Next Row: 5 dc in each ch-1 sp across, dc in top of turning ch. Fasten off, leaving length of yarn to sew seam. Sew sleeve seam. Repeat in same manner for other sleeve- Cut two 18 inch lengths of ½ inch wide ribbon.

Sew in place at each front corner of neck edge.

 

BONNET

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around, join with sl st in first sc - 16 sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in same St as Sl St, 2 dc in each sc around, join - 32 dc.

Rnd 4: Sl St in next dc, ch 4, dc in same St, *sk next dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc (V stitch made), repeat from * around, Sl St in 3rd ch of ch-4 - 16 V sts.

Rnd 5: Sl St in ch-1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, *3 dc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join.

Rnd 6: Sl St in sp between first and 2nd dc, ch 3, dc in same sp, 2 dc between 2nd and 3rd dc of same 3-dc group, *2 dc between first and 2nd dc of next 3-dc group, 2 dc between 2nd and 3rd dc of same 3-dc group, repeat from * around, join.

Rnd 7: Sl St in next dc and in sp next to dc, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, -2 dc) in same sp, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc (shell made)] between 2nd and 3rd dc of next 4-dc group, repeat from * around, join, ch 3, turn.

Row 8: *Work shell over next ch-1, repeat from * around 13 times, do not join, ch 3, turn.

Rows 9 through 16: Repeat Row 8. Row 17: *5 dc in next ch-1, repeat from * across, end dc in top of ch-3. Do not fasten off.

Bonnet Edging:
Ch 1, sc around lower edge of bonnet, join, fasten off.

Cut two 18 inch lengths of ½ inch wide ribbon. Sew to each lower front corner.

 

BOOTIES

Instep:
Beginning at toe, ch 9.

Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn - 8 sc.

Rows 2 through 9: SC across, ch 1, turn.

At end of Row 9, ch 24, Sl St in first SC of Row 9, fasten off.

Bootie Foot:
Rnd 1: Join yarn in 12th ch of ch-24 (center back of bootie), sc in same ch and in each of next 11 ch, 8 sc along side of instep, 3 sc at corner, 8 sc across toe, 3 sc in corner, 8 sc along side of instep, 12 sc in remaining ch, do not join - 54 sc.

Rnds 2 through 8: Sc in each sc around.

Rnds 9 through 12: Sc in each of next 25 sc, insert hook in next sc and draw up lp, insert in next sc and draw up another lp, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook (dec made), work 1 more dec, sc in each sc to back of bootie, dec over last 2 sc. At end of Rnd 12, fasten off.

With right sides together, sew sole seam.

Bootie Cuff:
Rnd 1: Join yarn at center back, ch 3, dc in next sc and in each sc around, working 1 dec at each side of instep, join - 30 dc.

Rnd 2: Ch 4, dc in same st, *sk next 2 sts, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, repeat from * around, sk last 2 sts, join in 3rd ch of ch-4.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same ch-1 sp, *work shell (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around - 10 shells.

Rnd 4: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, *5 dc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around, join, fasten off.

Cut two 18 inch lengths of ¼ inch wide ribbon. Weave through dc sts of ankle, tie in bow at center front.

 

Basic Afghan

The Basic Afghan Square:
Round 1: Ch 5; join in a circle in a sl st to form a ring chain 12 sc in a ring.

Round 2: To shape afghan into square round: [3sc in first sc, sc in next 2sc] 4 times.
The remainder of the center of the afghan is made by continuing to sc in the back loop of each stitch and increasing at corners.

Round 3: [Sc in next sc; 3sc] in center for a corner increase. Sc in back stitch of each sc increasing in corners.

Rounds 4-53: Sc in back loop of each Sc and continue increase in corners. This results in 124 sc on each side of the square, plus the corner stictch.

Shells or Base for Pineapple Border:
Rounds 1: Shells [3 dc, ch 3, 3dc] can be made around afghan with corner increases of [3 dc, ch 4, 3 dc] Stitches on this round are worked in both loops. There should be 20 shells on each side. The shells for the base for 6 pineapple points on each side and a four corner points. Therefore the points are worked over three base shells.

Round 2: Repeat round one using sl st to join round which counts as first double crochet of shell. (For shell border continue shells pattern rounds, increasing shells in corners in each round.) For pineapple border go to round 3.

Round 3: Sl st in each of the next 2 dc, [sl st, ch 3, 12 dc] in first ch 4 space. ***[ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc -beginning shell] [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc -shell over shell] twice, *11 dc in ch 3 space of next shell [base for pineapple shell] [shell over shell] twice; repeat from *to next corner shell**, ch 3, 13 dc in ch 4 space of next shell for corner. Repeat from *** ending at **. Ch 3, join round with slip stitch and fasten off to make pineapple points. Fasten off.

Pineapple Base rows:
Pineapple points look hard, but are actually easy if you understand the combination of shells, chains and single crochets that combine to creates the beautiful points. There are 6 points and four corners of this afghan that are bases on the same principal. The corners are worked on the three corner shells and it is recommended you work those first.

Base Row 1: Attach yarn to ch 3 space of the second shell after the corner group of shells. [ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc - beginning shell] *[ch 1, sc in next 11 dc, ch 1 -shell over shell] Repeat from * twice to corner ** ch 3. 13 dc in ch 4 space of corner shell *** around, end at **; ch 3; join to top of beginning ch 3 and fasten off.

Pineapple corner points:
Point row 1: With wrong side facing you, attach yarn to the center of shell before the corner and [ch 3, 2 dc ch 3, 3 dc -beginning shell], ch 4, 9 sc across the pineapple shell, ch 4, crochet a shell of [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc - shell over shell ] in the chain space of next shell, turn

Point row 2: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 5, 7sc in pineapple shell, ch 5, shell over shell, turn

Point row 3: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 6, 5 sc in pineapple shell, ch 6, shell over shell, turn

Point row 4: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 6, 3 sc in pineapple shell, ch 6 shell over shell, turn

Point row 5: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 7, 1 sc in pineapple shell, ch 7 shell over shell, turn

Point row 6: sl st to center of first shell and ch 3, 2dc. Pull next shell near first shell and crochet 3 dc's, turn

Point row 7: sl st in top of first dc, ch 2, hold back one loop in each of the next 5 dc's and end by pulling thread through all 6 loops held back. Fasten off.

Pineapple border points:
Point row 1: With right side facing you, attach yarn to center of ch 3 space of the next available shell. [ch 3, 2 dc ch 3, 3 dc -beginning shell] ch 3, 7 sc in pineapple shell, skip next dc, ch 3, shell over shell, turn

Point row 2: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 4, 5 sc in pineapple shell, ch 4, shell over shell, turn

Point row 3: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 5, 3 sc in pineapple shell, ch 5, shell over shell, turn

Point row 4: sl st to center of first shell and crochet a beginning shell, ch 6, 1 sc in pineapple shell, ch 6, shell over shell, turn

Point row 5: sl st to center of first shell and ch 3, 2 dc in ch space of shell, 3 dc in space of next shell, turn

Point row 6: sl in top of first dc, ch 2, hold back one loop in each of the next 5 dc's and end by pulling thread through all 6 loops held back. Fasten off.
